Introduction

Let me begin with a discipleship question: how will you follow Jesus in prayer and dependence on God this week?

Main Points

In this lesson shaped by Calvary Boise's teaching on DISTRACTED: Sex Talk, Christ invites us to receive truth with humility, practice repentance, and walk in faithful obedience.

Life in the Church

We're gonna be in the book of first corinthians starting in chapter 6 this morning and just to catch you up to speed as. A reminder for those of you who've been coming weekend and week out and for those of you who are new which I've already.

  • Met some of you this morning an extra welcome to you we're studying this book with a theme in mind it's a theme of.
  • The corinthian church at the time on your bulletin cover and behind me right now you see the word distracted and the theme that.
  • We're looking at is we look at this letter that the apostle paul writes to this church in corinth and he's writing to help.
  • Them bring their focus back to what really matters which is god's love for them and allowing the love of god to turn into.

Love for one another and they needed this message because they were a church that had lost the first love and when that happens. It turns into difficulties in the community that turn into little disputes that eventually turn into divisions and paul is writing them to try.

Sin and Salvation

Identify with that will not inherit the kingdom of God one of that one of them was fornicators and others were adulterers and other. Homosexuals and sodomites all of that was a preview of one of the main things that was causing some of these divisions which was.

  • A perverse view of sexuality and as much as I was ready to move on to the next thing I realized that there is.
  • Some very important things for us to be talking about because the church culture that we are reading about from the church in Corinth.
  • Feels a little bit like our culture in the way that this conversation is sometimes difficult to navigate sometimes it doesn't feel like it.
  • Really were that different than the non-believing world in this topic so what we're gonna do this morning is look at what Paul is.

Going to do to now finally address one of the elephants in the room was the perversion of sexuality within their church so before. We read our verses you've been prepped with the sermon theme the title of the sermon is sex talk and the subtitle is yeah.

Prayer and Dependence

Us maybe have some real time things that your word needs to cleanse us of this morning we pray that this would be a. Movement of the power of your spirit in our church for our health and also for your glory to come out of this community.

  • In Jesus name we pray amen starting in verse 12 it says all things are lawful for me but all things are not helpful.
  • All things are lawful for me but I will not be brought under the power of any foods for the stomach and the stomach.
  • For food but God will destroy both and it in them but now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord.
  • And the Lord for the body and God both raised up the Lord and will also raise up us in his power do you.

Not know that your bodies are members of Christ shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot. Certainly not or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her for the two he.

Life in the Church

Glorifying God we find the joy of bringing him glory how do we get there well Paul essentially is having this talk with a. Church that in many ways is confused about the topic so what he's going to do is try to bring some clarity what I.

  • Would like to do for us is also have some clarity for the health of our relationships with each other in our church and.
  • Also with our relationship with a world that finds the particular topic this morning in the way that we are going to allow the.
  • Word to wash us and bring clarity a bit of a trigger how do we do that there are three categories that Paul is.
  • Going to walk this church through that I find in my own way the needful refreshment in the first category we already read these.

But it will unfold as we go through this the first category is the need for the proper perspective about the topic what is. Our view of what this should and can look like what is our view of sexuality as believers believing that God gave this as.

Sin and Salvation

One of the ways that they are approaching sexuality in their community and we get more insight into that in the later verses that. Some of these believers it appears are taking the legal ramifications that it's totally allowed in Corinth and they're saying you know it's totally.

  • Fine it within the law it's a it's if you consider Amsterdam or some of these other cities in the world that we live.
  • In that have made this kind of a normal part of the city and it's allowed and these Corinthians are saying it's okay to.
  • Do it we're not breaking any laws and the perspective they have is if we're in the legal bounds to do it what is.
  • The problem to make matters a little more confusing for this particular church is that they're a church that lives in a city that.

Not only has the legal boundaries to allow sexual pursuit with a prostitute but also there's a religious context to this because the pagan. Religion of this city was also totally fine with it in fact one of the ways that they would visit prostitutes before they were.

Life in the Church

Walk around with a tiny oompa-loompa wherever we leave legal but pointless totally non beneficial and Paul is saying there are lots of legal. Things to do that you shouldn't do in fact we're gonna go on to get some more of the context because not only is.

  • It legal but it's also part of the natural urges of the body and verse 13 he says food is for the stomach and.
  • Stomach is for the food can you kind of just put it in that category let's put that same that Corinthian sane in our.
  • Terms you know you eat to live and then you kind of live to eat and isn't that true for those of you who.
  • Have young ones in the house you know they're in the stage of just eating to live we forced them to eat their nutrients.

They don't want to and they'll learn over time that shifts that not only do they eat to live but soon as you get. Older and you're aware of the taste buds and the palates and all of the amazing food options you can start to live.

Grace and Justification

Need to approach the whole conversation with the understanding that God has given us the gift of sex with the understanding that is an. Incredibly powerful thing he says I'm not going to come under the power of it and then he goes on to give a couple.

  • Examples that I think we need to know for our proper and healthy perspective on sexuality of what some of those powers are starting.
  • In verse 15 do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ shall I then take the members of Christ and make.
  • Them members of a harlot definitely not Paul is saying it's legal and it's kind of like food except that you belong to the.
  • Body of Christ if you are a believer what you accepted into your life when you had the chains of sin and emptiness and.

Loneliness and unreconciled relationship with God when all of that by the power of the gospel was cleansed and you were saved you didn't. Just get saved to go to heaven you got saved to become the body of Christ that God brought you in sovereignly to be.

Conclusion

We return to the opening teaching: discipleship is not just information, it is transformation through faith and obedience to Jesus. If we receive His Word and walk it out, He will shape us into people who endure and bear fruit.

Lord Jesus, help me hear Your Word, obey it with faith, and grow as Your disciple. Amen.
