Introduction

Let me begin with a discipleship question: how will you follow Jesus in prayer and dependence on God this week?

Main Points

In this lesson shaped by Calvary Boise's teaching on LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING: Love Never Ends, Christ invites us to receive truth with humility, practice repentance, and walk in faithful obedience.

Receiving the Teaching

We're in a series called love changes everything in the foundation of that series is in first Corinthians chapter 13 a chapter that is. Maybe the most famous chapter of the Bible because it gives us a revelation of what we all desire and want which is the.

  • And the knowledge of love and so in this series we look at just this one chapter but we're going to look at it.
  • Through a couple of different questions and the questions come up as we go through the chapter so what we're gonna do is read.
  • The chapter and I'll remind you of the first two questions that we've asked of what this is that we talk about when we.
  • Talk about love and then propose a question for this morning that I think is waiting for us in our verses that we'll be.

Studying this morning so turn with me if you have a Bible or a phone to first Corinthians chapter 13 I'm gonna be reading. Along or reading you can read along with me starting in verse 1 to review and then to look at what we will be.

Hope in Suffering

Up whenever we the love of God to a an audience this size a really an audience of one which is well what does. What love really look like because all of us have heard about love we've experienced relationships that talk about love or say I love.

  • You and yet we've all been faced with the reality that sometimes love has a pretty varied action behind it not all of us.
  • Have a very good template of what love actually looks like so last week we answered that question by studying verses 4 through 7.
  • When it says love suffers long and is kind love does not envy love does not parade itself love is not puffed up or.
  • Prideful love does not behave rudely love does not seek its own is not provoked and thinks no evil love does not rejoice in.

Iniquity but rejoices in the truth bears all things love believes all things love hopes all things and love endures all things so what. We find when answering the question what does love look like we find that the love in the revelation of God's Word looks entirely.

Faith and Obedience

In first Corinthians chapter 13 or maybe you've been in a relationship that started in love but did not end in love and love. Seemed to have run dry it seemed to have run out and so we're gonna answer the question today how can we be so.

  • Sure by looking at verses 8 through 13 which I'll read now it says love never fails but whether there are prophecies they will.
  • Fail whether there are tongues they will cease whether there is knowledge it will vanish away for we know in part and we prophesy.
  • In part but when that which is perfect is come then that which is in part will be done away when I was a.
  • Child I spoke as a child I understood as a child I thought as a child but when I became a man I put.

Away childish things for now we see in a mirror dimly but then face to face now I know in part but then I. Shall know just as I also am known and now abide these three faith hope and love but the greatest of these is love.

Grace and Justification

Debate is this there are some who read this and specifically zero in on verse eight that says that prophecies and tongues and knowledge. Will vanish away and they say that is actually already happened that the now was for a time when there was a need for.

  • Certain gifts specifically at the formation of the church age that are no longer needed because the then has already arrived and what they.
  • Say is the then or the perfection is the word of God the church age was still part of the revelation of God turning.
  • Into scripture but some will say that the gifts are no longer necessary because we're in the now as the now has turned into.
  • The venn because we now have the full revelation of God's Word and we don't need prophecy or special knowledge or even the gifts.

Of tongues because we now have God's Word and they say the van has arrived now we're not going to preach that today because. I find that answers to fall very short and what Paul is saying in verse 12 when he says for now we see in.

Family Discipleship

He calls you home and there will be a face-to-face revelation between God and His people that day is not now Paul says I. Press on towards the upward call of heaven and it awaits us and there is a fullness there is a completion that will make.

  • Today look partial it will make my preaching very incomplete it'll make the Word of God a small revelation compared to eternity that we.
  • Have in his glory and all of the worship and goodness of today will fade to black in the glory of then and here's.
  • A way to think about this recently as some of you know who is that who are at the weekend of our Thanksgiving service.
  • I was not here and that is because I was blessed by my father and mother who decided to take the entire family me.

And my two sisters and all of our kids on a trip to Hawaii it was a wonderful trip and even now seeing the. Picture on the screen behind me I have to be careful because I can easily fall in love with Hawaii in a way that.

Sin and Salvation

Arrived on that white sand where the palm trees sway in that blue beautiful blue water it would have been foolish to pull out. The picture and say stare at it because now we're here now we go and now we get on the beach and we enjoy.

  • The water this is a picture of what we have now compared to where we are going then eternity shore waits for you and.
  • We have a picture a revelation of the invitation that God has given us to be with him in all of eternity but it.
  • Is an incomplete and partial picture and so what we do to answer the question of how we can be so sure as we.
  • Look to the Word of God to remind us that most of the things on our journey from salvation the day you accept the.

Lord into your heart until the day he calls you home are temporary and they're vanishing and they're passing away so when we come. Through the seasons of life on a road to heaven it's so important that we realize that so much is passing away and we.

Grace and Justification

Pass away but whether there are prophecies they stop so what Paul is saying to this church that as we studied the first 12. Chapters it was a church that loved the gifts of the Spirit so much so that those who had the gifts of prophecy and.

  • Knowledge and tongues seem to have everything they wanted and they really had lost sight of the main thing the thing that remains which.
  • Is love and in their worship gathering there was a competition among the gifts and what Paul is saying is the worship gathering as.
  • You know it is passing away so for our helpful lesson here the first lesson the good things of our worship now what we're.
  • Doing this morning the way that we gather is a church body and we disperse the things of our worship now will be swallowed.

Up by the great things of our worship then our worship now this morning as wonderful as the songs were they will pale in. Comparison to all of eternity when we can spend ten thousand years forevermore singing the praises of God's grace and this is what it.

Conclusion

We return to the opening teaching: discipleship is not just information, it is transformation through faith and obedience to Jesus. If we receive His Word and walk it out, He will shape us into people who endure and bear fruit.

Lord Jesus, help me hear Your Word, obey it with faith, and grow as Your disciple. Amen.
