Introduction

Let me begin with a discipleship question: how will you follow Jesus in prayer and dependence on God this week?

Main Points

In this lesson shaped by Calvary Boise's teaching on BREAKTHROUGH: Living in the New Creation, Christ invites us to receive truth with humility, practice repentance, and walk in faithful obedience.

Faith and Obedience

We are going to now spend our time in the word in 2nd Corinthians starting in chapter 5 in a series that we're calling. Breakthrough and we called it breakthrough because of the timing of our calendar year this is a letter to a church that Paul is.

  • Writing with an encouragement and with exciting truth about what God gives us as we seek Him and trust him to breakthrough and continue.
  • On it is one of the most powerful promises of the scripture for anyone who has put their faith in Jesus what that means.
  • For your life and this is a passage of Scripture you can study for your whole life and you can hear preached numerous times.
  • And there will still be depths to search and I say that as a precursor to let you know that I'm gonna give us.

My best attempt at trying to give this passage of Scripture justice it is so powerful and so worthy of our attention that it's. Almost intimidating but read along with me started in 2nd Corinthians chapter 5 and I want to look at the whole chapter with you.

Prayer and Dependence

The new heavens and the new earth and then we'll really understand what it means to be new in Christ but this says you. Are a new creation you're a new creation in Christ the day that you accept him into your life the old has passed away.

  • Your baptism represents the old man or woman being put to death in the water and then coming out of the water as a.
  • Brand new person born by the spirit or born again and the challenge of that is how do we live in that how do.
  • We live in the newness well I want to look at a couple aspects of that and the importance of that the importance of.
  • Living in the new and the challenge of this you can kind of see an illustration for the challenge of this in the season.

Of our calendar year right now the season or a calendar year is a new year it's now 2020 the old year has passed. Away and yet if you're like me some of you have already made the mistake of signing in some important documents or maybe a.

Sin and Salvation

About being new today and actually walkie in the newness because in Romans chapter six it's important to not just understand the theology of. The new but also to have it define your life with God and the things you do with your life look what it says.

  • In Romans 6 how shall we who died to sin live any longer in it or do you not know that as many as.
  • Of you who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death therefore buried with him through baptism into death that just as.
  • Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also should walk present tense today walk in the.
  • Newness of life so we'll look at it in a couple ways first some of you may be thinking I'm not new I have.

Not accepted Jesus into my life well let us give you a understanding of how should be made new and a reminder to all. Of us who have accepted the new creation life and it gives us a very easy to understand or at least a model of.

Faith and Obedience

To polish the old you it took a brand new spiritual rebirth through the faith that you see in Jesus Christ dying on the. Cross for your sins which is what we'll end with and has given us a Ministry of reconciliation we are now part of what.

  • God is doing to reconcile the lost and dying world to himself that's how we're made new through the mysteries of God lived out.
  • In the faith that we put in this reality and there's another way that we're made new because ultimately whether you accept Christ today.
  • Or you accepted him twenty years ago you still have some reminders of the old you still have your same look and feel and.
  • Body and you have memories of your history and so what makes you new is not necessarily seen right now but what makes you.

New is what happens inside of you that you are made new as a spiritual person that's now alive and what makes you new. Is the way that you now live by faith in what we just put our faith in and so I want to talk about.

Repentance and Renewal

Seek God with a new expectation for him to answer your plea so let us go now through each one of these four things. That for us that are the new creation people among us this is your life you have a new perspective on life for this.

  • We actually go back to where we left off last week in 1st or 2nd Corinthians chapter 4 look up says as he's building.
  • Up to what we read this morning in Chapter five second Corinthians chapter four verse 16 says this therefore we do not lose heart.
  • Even though our outward man is perishing yet the inward man the new man inside of you the Spirit of God the hope of.
  • Glory is being renewed day by day by day there is a new renewal of your spiritual life in God that happens day by.

Day why for our light affliction which is but for a moment is working for us a far more exceeding eternal weight of glory. New creation people no longer live for momentary and temporary things of this world because we have the spirit of eternity inside of us.

Faith and Obedience

Cursed the old creation the old creation is withering away and the people who are not born of the Eternal Spirit of God in. Them are part of the old creation and there is no hope for them there is not the new perspective that God has made.

  • For eternity and you do not have the perspective of death that the new creation people have but for you who have put your.
  • Faith in the eternal God look what it says in verse 1 of chapter 5 for we know this is the confidence we have.
  • The new perspective of living by faith and not by sight we know that if our earthly house this tent is destroyed we have.
  • A building from God a house not made with hands eternal in the heavens for in this we groan earnestly desiring to be clothed.

With our habitation which is from heaven if indeed having been clothed we shall not be found naked part of me wanted to spend. Our entire sermon time in this aspect of the hope that we have to live radically in this temporary life because of the promise.

Life in the Church

Permanent building will do to save you from the elements they wear down easy and they wear down quickly and if you lived full. Time in a which some people in our city actually do there should be a groaning inside of you for something more sustainable for.

  • Something more permanent and for those of you who've been going to our church long enough you know that we have an easy way.
  • To understand this for our church because we once lived as a church in a tent who remembers the tent it was a glorious.
  • Time so glad that we're still together after living in a tent for a year as a church I was especially difficult during this.
  • Time of year and I remember as we were gathering in our tent days in the winter we were all groaning for something a.

Little warmer for something a little more secure against the elements I remember that sitting in those Sunday Sermons during our tent days and. The rain would be beating down and they're big fans you could hardly hear anything and we were all wondering is that are we.

Conclusion

We return to the opening teaching: discipleship is not just information, it is transformation through faith and obedience to Jesus. If we receive His Word and walk it out, He will shape us into people who endure and bear fruit.

Lord Jesus, help me hear Your Word, obey it with faith, and grow as Your disciple. Amen.
