Introduction

Let me begin with a discipleship question: how will you follow Jesus in prayer and dependence on God this week?

Main Points

In this lesson shaped by Calvary Boise's teaching on Correcting the Course of Our Lives Through Christ - Colossians 3:1-4 (10/04/2020), Christ invites us to receive truth with humility, practice repentance, and walk in faithful obedience.

Life in the Church

We're gonna be in colossians chapter three we're starting a new chapter but it really is one of those man-made chapter breaks because um. It really requires us to both look at the context of to why we're going to read what we read this morning based off.

  • What was last said in chapter two which kind of uh bleeds into this and for uh sake of time not re-preaching chapter two.
  • If you weren't here last weekend we did an entire sermon on the opposite of this message and so really chapter two and chapter.
  • Three collide with this one question that we'll start with this morning because I believe if you think if you pay attention to everything.
  • That's happened in our world if you pay attention to even what's happening in your own life or the things that are happening in.

Our church in the atmosphere of this year there is an underlying question beneath all of it there's a question that church leaders are. Trying to figure out there's a question that specifically the world and the non-believing world is trying to figure out and that question is.

Sin and Salvation

But it's not enough just to find him it's also a reality that we must set our minds on him and you know why. That is so important that's not a question you know why that's so important I'm telling you because we live in a world where.

  • There is a megaphone on the attention of our minds screaming at us from the world that we live in every single one of.
  • You by all accounts and maybe I'll take it down to 99.9 of you have something in your in your pocket or in your.
  • Hand that is screaming for your mind it wants your attention it wants your attention to turn into action and to turn into you.
  • Staring at what it tells you to think about it's called your phone uh spoiler alert as I was preparing this message in fact.

There was one there was one morning when I didn't have my bible and into my journal and I saw I just pulled out. My phone and I realized it is such a dichotomy to have a phone in this culture and by no means do I expect.

Faith and Obedience

And in one way we get a picture of the disciples seeing that the more they follow the call of jesus on their life. The more joy they get this is what they were made to do he comes up to some of the disciples and says you.

  • Know you're fishers of men I'm going to make you fishers he said they were fishermen I'm going to make you fishers of men.
  • I'm going to take the thing that you knew about yourself and in me you're going to find yourself even more and in one.
  • Way they get to experience this is in luke 10 he takes his disciples he had 70 disciples that he sends out he gives.
  • Them authority to do ministry just like he gives us authority to do ministry and what happens it works he sends them out with.

Power he sends them out to certain places he says some of you are going to preach the gospel people are accepted some of. You will get rejected and all of those things I'm sovereign it'll be okay and look what happens when they come back it says.

Conclusion

We return to the opening teaching: discipleship is not just information, it is transformation through faith and obedience to Jesus. If we receive His Word and walk it out, He will shape us into people who endure and bear fruit.

Lord Jesus, help me hear Your Word, obey it with faith, and grow as Your disciple. Amen.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me hear Your Word, obey it with faith, and grow as Your disciple. Amen.
