Introduction

In Matthew chapter 4, we encounter Jesus as He travels throughout Galilee, teaching in synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and performing miracles of healing. This passage sets the stage for the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus, moved by compassion for the multitudes, ascends a mountainside to teach His disciples about the heart of God and the essence of loving Him and one another. This teaching is framed by the reality that many were lost, overwhelmed by various voices in their lives, and lacked a shepherd to guide them. As followers of Jesus today, we are invited to gather around His feet, reflect on His teachings, and understand what it truly means to live in a relationship of love with God and others.

Main Points

As The Good Shepherd Jesus Looks

As the good shepherd, Jesus looks upon the crowds with deep compassion, recognizing their weariness and confusion. In His teachings, especially throughout the Sermon on the Mount, He desires to provide direction and clarity.

  • The essence of this compassion is profoundly connected to our understanding of prayer.
  • When we pray, we are participating in a relationship where we express our needs, worries, and desires to a God who cares for us intimately.
  • Jesus' heart for us compels us to approach Him with our burdens, trusting that He understands our plight.
  • In Matthew 7:7-11, Jesus lays out a straightforward but profound encouragement regarding prayer: "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be o.

Prayer Becomes The Avenue Where We

Prayer becomes the avenue where we cultivate our intimacy with the Father. Through prayer, we express our desires, the longing to know Him deeper and experience His presence more fully.

  • The persistent call to ask, seek, and knock indicates not only the urgency of our requests but also the commitment we must have towards nurturing our relationship with Him.
  • My experience of searching for a lost item mirrors the pursuit we should have in our relationship with God.
  • Just as I was compelled to find my phone, knowing its importance, we should search for the Lord with passion and purpose.
  • Hebrews 11:6 emphasizes that God rewards those who diligently seek Him.

Our Prayer Life Should Reflect Not

Our prayer life should reflect not just casual interaction but deep, intentional seeking after God, just as a treasure hunter pursues their prize. We must ask ourselves: Is our seeking reflective of a heart truly yearning for God? The teaching on prayer also reminds us of God's nature as a loving Father. In Matthew 7:9-11, Jesus illustrates that even parents, flawed as they are, know how to give good gifts to their children. How much more does our perfect Heavenly Father want to bless us? Yet, we must remember that God's gifts may not always look like what we expect or desire.

Prayer Is Not About Manipulating God

Prayer is not about manipulating God into giving us what we want; it is about aligning our hearts with His will. Thus, prayer should not only be a list of requests but a space for relationship renewal, allowing us to hear His voice and understand His heart. Many of us grapple with the feeling of unanswered prayers. Yet, we must understand that unanswered prayer is the exception rather than the rule. The Scriptures affirm that God hears us and responds, sometimes the answer is not what we expect or in our timing. We should remember verses like James 1:5, encouraging us to seek wisdom in our asking, which may mean we need to adjust our requests according to His purpose.

Our Call Is To Persist In

Our call is to persist in prayer, trusting in God’s infinite wisdom and love. The ultimate goal of prayer is not just about our requests; it’s about knowing God and being known by Him. As expressed in Matthew 7:21-23, it is possible to do many good things in the name of God without truly knowing Him. God desires a relationship where we are intimately connected with His heart. In prayer, we gather our thoughts and emotions, express our vulnerabilities, and lay them before God, ensuring that we build our relationship with Him based on trust, honesty, and sincere communication. As we gather to worship, we are reminded that worship is an expression of prayer.

It Is An Avenue Through Which

It is an avenue through which we communicate with God, a cry of our hearts towards our Creator. During worship, we must engage with honesty, bringing all of ourselves, including our discomfort and awkwardness, before God. Let's embrace this moment as an opportunity to sit and listen, to bring our questions, our requests, and our love before Him.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the essence of prayer, as demonstrated by Jesus, transcends mere requests; it is the lifeline of our relationship with God. We are invited to ask, seek, and knock with passion and persistence, firmly believing that as we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us. Let us cultivate a deep, rich prayer life where we not only present our needs but spend time engaging in the beautiful reality of being known by the Father. Embrace this season as a timely reminder of God's heart for relationship, challenging us to soar beyond our discomfort into the depths of divine fellowship.
