Introduction

In a thought-provoking experiment at Princeton Seminary years ago, students were divided into two groups and tasked with preparing sermons in a limited time. As they made their way to deliver these messages, one group was informed they could take their time, while the other group was told they were already late and needed to hurry. In between, a man was intentionally placed in distress, slumped over and moaning on a curb. The question arose: how many of these students would stop to help him based on the level of urgency they perceived? This scenario sets the stage for a deeper exploration of what it means to walk in love as we approach the New Year, using guidance from Ephesians chapter 5.

Main Points

In Ephesians 5 1-2 Paul Exhorts

In Ephesians 5:1-2, Paul exhorts us to "be imitators of God as beloved children, and walk in love, just as Christ loved us." This directive emphasizes that love should be a defining characteristic of our interactions, one that reflects the very nature of God. As I encourage you to meditate on these verses this season, I want you to consider love not just as an ideal but as an active participation in the life of Christ.

  • Paul connects this spiritual calling to the day-to-day reality of our lives.
  • Too often, Christians fall short of embodying this love, not due to ignorance but because they are distracted by life's demands and the pace at which we live.
  • One of the primary barriers to walking in love is the hurry that defines so many of our lives.
  • When we are rushed, we fail to notice the needs of those around us, including our families, friends, and strangers.

Just As The Hurried Seminarians Missed

Just as the hurried seminarians missed the opportunity to help the man in distress on their way to preach, we too often find ourselves blind to the hurt and needs of others. I invite you to reflect upon how hurry manifests in your own life, perhaps through impatience with your children or neglecting meaningful conversations.

  • Understanding that we cannot love fully while running fast is critical to our discipleship journey.
  • Modern culture has profoundly shifted towards self-focus, making it harder for us to see others.
  • It's as if we have reduced relationships to mere transactional exchanges, often ignoring the beauty of communion and compassion.
  • In an age dominated by social media and personal achievement, I encourage you to step back and consider: how much attention do we lavish on others versus ourselves?

This Realization Can Cajole Us To

This realization can cajole us to challenge our perspectives and lead us to prioritize love in tangible ways. Paul does not merely instruct us to love; he provides Christ as the ultimate model, "just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us." To love like Jesus means engaging in sacrificial acts that don't always lead to measurable returns but exist purely for the sake of another’s well-being. This kind of love arises from closeness to Christ; thus, the more time we spend in His Word and presence, the better equipped we become to reflect His love to others. Regularly immersing ourselves in Scripture and the life of Jesus is foundational to our growth and imitation of God. Walking in love is not limited to grand gestures; it is found in the smallest interactions, like letting another car merge into your lane, or taking time out of your day to engage with someone you don’t know. I challenge you to consider practical ways to express love in your daily routines.

Whether At Work Home Or While

Whether at work, home, or while driving, developing habits of kindness can transform our environments and deeply impact families and communities. Our gatherings should be characterized by love and hospitality. Often, we come to church with a focus on our own established relationships, overlooking newcomers or hurting individuals among us. Hebrews 13:2 urges us to show hospitality because many will be unaware of those in need. As a community, we need to actively seek connections, making it a priority to welcome newcomers. This act of reaching beyond our comfort zones embodies what it means to walk in love and helps create an inviting atmosphere for those seeking God.

Conclusion

As I conclude this exploration of walking in love, I urge you to take these words to heart. Embracing love as a lifestyle is not just a command but a reflection of our relationship with Christ, our call to imitate Him. May this New Year prompt you to rekindle your commitment to love as you navigate everyday interactions. Walking in love transforms not only our own hearts but our families, friendships, and churches, demonstrating to the world the beauty of God's love through us.
