Introduction

In this sermon, I want to remind us of the profound truth found in Hebrews chapter 12: that as Christians, we are part of an unshakable Kingdom. This Kingdom is not of this Earth, and although we may appreciate our buildings and ministries, our citizenship lies in a far greater reality, one that is eternal and imperishable. Understanding this equips us to live lives that reflect true grace, echoing the reverence and godly fear we owe to our King. It is essential to grasp that the discipline of God comes as a loving correction, not as a punitive measure against those He has redeemed.

Main Points

As Believers We Belong To A

As believers, we belong to a kingdom that is described as unshakable. This concept is foundational to our identity in Christ.

  • Hebrews 12 reminds us that everything around us will eventually perish, but the Kingdom of God endures forever.
  • This realization should radically shape our perspectives on life, spiritual disciplines, and our relationships with one another.
  • Acknowledging that we are children of the King imbues our lives with dignity and purpose; we are tasked with living out the truths of this Kingdom in a world that is often chaotic.
  • Godly fear is a critical theme in our relationship with God.

This Term Derived From The Greek

This term, derived from the Greek word "ulía," emphasizes a careful consideration of both circumstances and their potential outcomes. It involves fearing God's discipline, not out of dread but out of a love that recognizes the holiness of God and the importance of our relationship with Him.

  • We should be aware that sin disrupts this relationship, and thus, God’s correction serves to restore us rather than to condemn us.
  • This perspective promotes an attitude of repentance and humility, acknowledging that our loving Father desires to keep us close rather than distant.
  • The often-quoted phrase "our God is a consuming fire" appears once in Hebrews 12:29, and while it can evoke fear of judgment, in actuality, it represents God’s purifying presence.
  • This consuming fire symbolizes God's glory and holiness, intended to eliminate sin and idolatry from our lives rather than to incite dread.

The Consuming Fire Is A Means

The consuming fire is a means of sanctification, enabling us to shed the impurities that cloud our walk with God. We see examples of this throughout Scripture, such as in Exodus 24, where God's glory appears as a fire. The necessity of aligning ourselves with His purity should compel us to rid ourselves of anything that stands between us and our relationship with Him. In whatever form it takes, idolatry can become a significant obstacle in our lives. The Israelites struggled with this in their journey, and we too are meant to remove idols from our hearts. These idols can distract us from God and lead us into sin, undermining both our witness and our growth.

Therefore We Must Continually Examine Our

Therefore, we must continually examine our lives for competing desires that detract from our relationship with God. From materialism to misguided priorities, recognizing these idols is paramount to living wholly in devotion to Christ. Discipleship is a call we all share as followers of Christ, and it requires commitment. We are responsible for not just attending Church but also actively participating in our spiritual growth and that of others. This means preaching the gospel and making disciples, ensuring that we embody the message we share. The warning against lukewarm faith is evident; we cannot settle for a superficial experience of spirituality and must cultivate a vibrant, authentic relationship with Jesus that transforms how we live.

Unfeigned Love For One Another As

Unfeigned love for one another, as directed in John 13:34-35, should be the hallmark of our community, setting us apart as true disciples. Finally, the call to contentment is crucial in an age plagued by consumerism and discontent. As God’s children, we must remember that He supplies all our needs and promises never to leave us nor forsake us. Instead of succumbing to covetousness, we are encouraged to find satisfaction in our relationship with Christ. This shift in focus allows us to appreciate God’s blessings and cultivates a heart of thankfulness. By aligning our desires with God’s will, we experience true fulfillment, becoming instruments of His love and grace in the world.

Conclusion

In summary, as members of God’s unshakable Kingdom, we are called to live distinctly and gracefully, rooted in godly fear that draws us closer to our Father. Recognizing Him as a consuming fire offers hope and assurance that He purifies us for His purposes and desires a profound relationship with us. May we remain vigilant against the snares of idols, committed to authentic discipleship, and content in the knowledge that Christ is enough for us. Let our lives reflect the truth of who He is and what He has accomplished on our behalf.
