Introduction

The week ahead of us is significant in the Christian calendar, often referred to as Passion Week or Holy Week. It coincides with Passover, creating a profound convergence of events. As we focus on this time, my heart is drawn to the elements of Palm Sunday within our ongoing study of Acts, specifically Acts chapter 8. Today, we will explore the journey of Jesus into Jerusalem, highlighting three paths that represent two essential choices. The first of these paths is the one Jesus took, marked by humility and obedience, as He rode into the city on a donkey, revealing His identity as the long-awaited King and Messiah.

Main Points

As We Consider The Triumphal Entry

As we consider the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, we must recognize the significance of His choice of a donkey as His mode of transportation. In a moment that could have resounded with the glory of a conquering king, He instead embraced humility.

  • This choice emphasizes that true kingship in the Kingdom of God is not characterized by earthly power, but by servitude and meekness.
  • Jesus deliberately chose not to ride a warhorse or display splendor, but rather to fulfill the prophecy found in Matthew 21:4-5, which speaks to His humble nature.
  • As we follow Christ, we are called to embody this same humility, to choose the path of obedient service rather than striving for recognition and acclaim.
  • Interestingly, donkeys serve as powerful symbols in this narrative.

As I Reflect On Their Characteristics

As I reflect on their characteristics, I am struck by the practical life lessons we can draw from them. For example, every purebred donkey bears a cross-shaped mark on its back, a divine reminder of the sacrifice associated with following Christ.

  • Just as we are called to take up our cross daily (Luke 9:23), so too must we embrace the burden of commitment to our faith.
  • Additionally, donkeys form deep bonds with one another, reflecting our need for relationships in the body of Christ.
  • They are known for their exceptional hearing, reminding us of the importance of listening, both to God and to our community.
  • As we engage with one another, let us remember the call to be attentive and supportive, much like these humble creatures.

Moving Forward In Acts We Encounter

Moving forward in Acts, we encounter Philip, a servant of Christ, who exemplifies obedience on the road to divine appointments. When given seemingly mundane directions, Philip did not hesitate. He ventured into a desert road and encountered an Ethiopian eunuch, a man of influence and wealth, seeking understanding of Scripture. This sets a profound example of how God orchestrates divine encounters when we act faithfully in our everyday lives. It is vital for us to remain attentive and responsive to these moments, recognizing that our willingness to follow God’s leading can create pathways to significant changes in the lives of others. The dramatic conversion of Saul on the road to Damascus reveals another aspect of choice in our faith journey.

Encountering The Risen Christ Saul Is

Encountering the risen Christ, Saul is confronted with the truth of his actions and compelled to change. The trembling question, "Lord, what do you want me to do?" emerges from his astonishment, a powerful reflection of true repentance. This moment showcases the transformative power of Christ’s presence: it draws us from darkness into light, from blindness into sight. As we navigate our own spiritual paths, we, too, must regularly seek the Lord with that same humility as we inquire about His purpose for our lives. Ultimately, we stand at a crossroads, will we follow the path of Christ, marked by humility and obedience, similar to that of Philip, or will we choose the resistant way of Saul before his transformation? Each choice propels us toward a distinct destination, and while God’s grace is boundless, our willingness to walk in faith shapes our journey.

The Paths We Select Impact Not

The paths we select impact not just our lives but the lives of those around us. As we approach this significant week, I encourage you to take time for reflection and prayer. Ask God daily, "Lord, what do you want me to do?" This simple yet profound question can open doors to new opportunities for ministry and service, inviting us to join in the work God is actively doing in our world. By staying attuned to His voice and guidance, we can be assured of encountering divine appointments, much like Philip did.

Conclusion

In summary, the week ahead holds tremendous potential for spiritual renewal as we prepare to celebrate Resurrection Sunday. The narratives of Jesus's entry into Jerusalem, the lessons drawn from donkeys, from Philip's obedience, and Saul's transformation all culminate in a call to us: to walk in humility, obedience, and faith. As we seek God’s leading in our lives, let us remain attentive to the path He sets before us, asking earnestly what He desires from us each day. May we embody the spirit of Christ as we diligently pursue Him, ready to embrace the divine plans He has in store for us.
