Introduction

In Matthew chapter 2, we witness the arrival of the wise men from the East, who come seeking the newborn King of the Jews. Their journey is a dramatic one, prompted by the appearance of a star that signals the birth of Jesus. This news deeply disturbs Herod, the reigning king, who perceives a threat to his power from this new king. The account foreshadows a significant conflict between the old order represented by Herod and the new reign initiated by Jesus. Despite the passage of time since Christmas, I emphasize the importance of understanding this story, for it holds crucial implications as we move into a new year. The message we find here urges us to reflect on how we can make space for Jesus in our lives amidst competing distractions and the desire to protect our own territories in our hearts.

Main Points

As We Explore The Response To

As we explore the response to the birth of Jesus, we recognize a fundamental principle: the old hates the new. King Herod’s fear at the announcement of a rival king illustrates this truth vividly.

  • He perceives Jesus’ birth not as a moment of joy but as a direct challenge to his authority.
  • This struggle is not just historical; it is a prevalent theme in Scripture where the kingdoms of man often clash with the Kingdom of God.
  • As we transition into a new year, we should introspectively examine the Herod within us, those parts of our hearts that clutch tightly to control and dominion over our lives.
  • Like the wise men who recognized the significance of the star and what it represented, we too are called to seek and recognize the new things God is doing in our lives and in the w.

Every One Of Us Houses Competing

Every one of us houses competing kings in our hearts, those desires and ambitions that vie for our allegiance. The story of Israel’s monarchy teaches us that it did not end well when humans sought to reign over their own lives without God.

  • Instead of living under the authority of our true King, we may find ourselves like King Saul, grasping for power and control that ultimately leads to our downfall.
  • The internal struggle against self-serving tendencies is echoed throughout the Bible; we are reminded that "there is none righteous, not even one" (Romans 3:10).
  • The awareness of our own nature invites us to confess and surrender these false kings in our lives to embrace Christ’s sovereign rule instead.
  • Psalm 91 speaks of God's refuge, a place where we can dwell securely.

As We Face The Distractions And

As we face the distractions and chaos of life, God beckons us to come into His presence for safety and renewal. This year, let us cultivate the habit of seeking refuge in Him, allowing His truth and love to govern our lives. God desires relationship over ritualistic attendance in church; He invites us to live in close communion with Him. The wise men’s worship of Jesus sets a standard for us, a posture of surrender and adoration that is essential in the ongoing battle against our old selves. We must make intentional choices that lead us to prioritize time with God, whether through prayer, word study, or simply resting in His presence. The climax of the story becomes evident when Herod dies, opening the door for Jesus to return.

This Serves As An Illustration Of

This serves as an illustration of how our commitment to pursuing Christ requires the death of those things that hinder His work in our lives. As we reflect on the past year, we must ask ourselves, what false idols or kings have kept us from fully embracing the newness of life that Christ offers? When we release our grip on these idols, be it materialism, ambitions, or fears, we open our hearts to a renewed sense of hope and purpose. God's promise remains that He will revive His people when the old has been cast out and a new era of life emerges in our hearts. As we step into this new year, I encourage each of us to examine the various kings that occupy our lives. Are they kingdoms that lead to life, or are they fraught with the despair and emptiness of Herod's reign?

By Submitting These Areas To Christ

By submitting these areas to Christ, we invite His transformative power into our lives, a journey that begins with sincere introspection and prayer, agreeing that He may reign supreme. Let's walk this path together as a community, encouraging one another to dwell in the beauty of Christ’s presence, finding renewal and strength for the journey ahead.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Christmas story is not simply an event confined to one season; it is a continuous invitation into a deeper relationship with our true King, Jesus. As we enter a new year, let us carry the lessons we glean from the account of the wise men and Herod, recognizing that the old threats the new and that the rightful place of King Jesus must be established in our hearts. May we lay down our false crowns and surrender to the transformative reign of Christ, allowing Him to reshape our priorities, our desires, and ultimately, our lives. Let us dwell in the refuge He provides and watch as He brings forth new life and joy in our midst.
