Trusting God's Provision Through Prayer: Lessons from Elijah

Series: Calvary Boise Miracles of the Bible Prophets and Their Stories God's Provision Through Trials Teacher: Pastor Rhett
Facebook X Email

Introduction

In our exploration of the life of the prophet Elijah, we’ll focus on three significant miracles that highlight God’s unwavering care and provision for him. Elijah, as a prophet, was tasked with calling the people of Israel back to God during a time when they had turned to false idols and followed the wickedness of King Ahab. This sermon opens our hearts to the powerful truth that through trials, like droughts and desperate needs, God consistently provides for those who follow Him. In the first chapter of First Kings, we see Elijah’s journey and how his obedience leads to miraculous provisions.

Main Points

The First Miracle We Encounter Is

The first miracle we encounter is God providing food and water for Elijah during a severe drought. In First Kings 17:1-6, Elijah boldly tells King Ahab that there will be no rain until he declares it.

  • Following God's direction, Elijah retreats to the Kerith brook where God commands ravens to bring him food.
  • Here, we see two vital lessons: firstly, the importance of obedience, as Elijah follows God's command even when it seems unconventional.
  • Secondly, we observe the miraculous way God provides, using ravens to deliver sustenance.
  • Elijah's dependence on God reminds us that in our own times of need, He is fully capable of providing in extraordinary ways.

As We Move To The Second

As we move to the second miracle described in 1 Kings 17:8-16, we find Elijah sent to the village of Zarephath, where he meets a widow gathering sticks. The widow is in dire straits, having only enough food to prepare what she believes is her last meal.

  • Yet, when Elijah asks her to feed him first, she chooses to trust his word from the Lord.
  • This act of faith demonstrates that obedience often requires sacrificial trust.
  • By prioritizing Elijah’s needs, she encountered God’s blessing, witnessing her supplies of flour and oil miraculously replenish.
  • Through this, we learn that our willing sacrifice and trust in God's provision can lead to unexpected blessings.

The Third Miracle Recounts The Dramatic

The third miracle recounts the dramatic revival of the widow’s son who had fallen ill and died (1 Kings 17:17-24). Following the miraculous provision of food, the widow faces a new crisis that tests her faith. Elijah's earnest prayer leads to the boy’s revival, showcasing the powerful relationship between faith and divine intervention. This moment emphasizes that trusting God can lead to marvelous outcomes, even when circumstances seem hopeless. It serves as profound encouragement to us; no one is beyond the reach of God’s miracle-working power when they place their trust in Him. As we reflect on these miracles, it’s essential to remember that our faith often grows through our trials and that God’s care is unwavering.

Conclusion

The lessons drawn from Elijah's experiences illuminate God's faithfulness and the promise of His provision in our lives. Each miracle speaks to the reality of God's care for His people amid their struggles, whether through physical needs or life’s upheavals. Just as God provided for Elijah and the widow, He offers us assurance of His sustaining grace. As we cultivate our relationship with God, we can expect to witness His miraculous workings not just as historical events, but also in our everyday lives. We are reminded that God’s greatest provision, Jesus Christ, grants us eternal life, a miracle surpassing all others.
